FAQS

If your still on the fence about whether Micropigmentation is for you, these frequently asked questions might reassure you.

What is Micropigmentation?

Micropigmentation or permanent make-up (PMU) is the revolutionary method of depositing hypoallergenic mineral pigments into the dermal layer of the skin. With an ultra-thin needle and pigment, the shape of the eyebrows, eyes or lips is enhanced. Micropigmentation is also known as permanent make-up or cosmetic tattooing. It is sometimes wrongly confused with cosmetic tattoos (e.g. eyebrow tattoos or eyeliner tattoos). However, the pigments used for permanent make-up are introduced less deeply into the skin layer and have a different composition from tattoo inks. Micropigmentation devices are also more refined than tattoo machines, and the techniques that are used are different.

What factors will affect semi permanent makeup?

  • The amount of time you spend under the sun. Sun exposure fades the pigment faster; sun block must be used to prolong your enhancement.

  • Skin cell regeneration. We all have different metabolisms. The longer your own regeneration process takes, the longer the pigment will hold.

  • The speed at which the skin absorbs the pigment – the slower the absorption rate, the longer the pigment will hold.

  • The choice of color – some colors fade quicker than others, e.g. a blonde color will fade quicker than a dark brown color.

  • The area of treatment – enhancements to the face, for example, fade more quickly due to constant exposure and product use.

  • Oily skin tends to lose color more quickly than other skin types.

How are the colours selected for permanent makeup?

The choice of color depends on your skin tone and the color of your hair and eyes. With the assistance of your professional artist, suitable colors are selected in order to find the best match. You may like to bring along your own makeup pencil.

Is there a risk of infection in my permanent makeup appointment?

There is a minimal risk of infection since strict hygiene standards are maintained. Sterile needles from sealed packets are used only once. To prevent cross contamination, the technician wears sterile gloves. An antibiotic cream is applied to the skin after treatment. Strict after care rules are given to the client at the end of each treatment.

How long permanent makeup will last?

Semi Permanent Makeup can last several years. This depends on your skin type, sun exposure, technique, and lifestyle. Longevity of pigment also varies depending on how well your skin holds the pigment. We recommend a color boost to be applied every 18-24 months to keep enhancements looking fresh. Should you choose not to have a yearly color boost, your enhancement will fade over a period of approximately 2-3 years. Lips and Eyeliners tend to last longer.

How many PMU treatments are needed?

Two treatments are usually needed. The second session is performed 6-8 weeks after the first one but no more than 9 weeks after the original session. If you wait more than 9 weeks, the pigmentation will likely wear off almost completely and you will need a complete “re-do”. The second session (touch up) is very important to asses the retention of the pigment and color. In some cases, a third session may be necessary within 6-8 weeks apart. With most procedures, the color fades dramatically after one week. For the second treatment, the practitioner gauges color retention and adds the required amount of pigment.

What should I expect after permanent makeup treatment?

Immediately after the treatment, the color will appear darker than your chosen shade. This is because the pigment takes around seven days to enter the deeper layers of the skin. After 7-10 days, exfoliation takes place. The top layer of the skin peels off, leaving a softer, lighter color below. The result is a natural looking enhancement. As the treated area is settling down, itching may occur. This is a good sign as it means the skin is healing. Apply the recommended cream to the treated area as directed.
